Change of state
Lesson plan on Change of State (chemistry)
Level: 3Express
Learning outcomes:
Students should:
o know that when a liquid changes to a solid, the temperature remains the same and the change of state involves energy transfer;
o relate a change of state to a particle model in terms of forming or breaking bonds.
ICT tools: use data loggers and data logging software
Description:
Introduction:
1. Show video on the use of data logger to measure temperature: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH9_EkUpq08
Next, ask pupils to get into pairs or small groups and outline the experimental procedure as follows.
    1. Melt the solid in a water bath - the apparatus consists of a temperature sensor and test tubes x 2, mounted on the same stand.
    2. Start logging and immediately lift the entire assembly away from the water bath.
    3. Log temperature changes for 20 minutes. Stir with the temperature sensor during the cooling, to help obtain a better horizontal section.
Evaluation:
1. How did the use of ICT:
o help pupils to make better progress towards achieving the learning objectives?
o affect the pace of learning?
o affect pupils’ motivation, interest and time spent on task?
o affect your ability to differentiate your teaching and personalize pupils’ learning?
2. What knowledge or skills have you gained and extended in teaching this lesson?
3. What adaptations would you make to the lesson and its resources to suit the needs of your class?
